Lord of the Rings ME72 Dead Men of Dunharrow

Repainted these 2 miniatures after my improvement in my painting skills in this century compared to the last century where it was predominantly just dry brushing. Happy how these turned out and just wonderful atmospheric characterful miniatures.

Citadel Wood Elves Dryad 5 (1999)

As a contrast to the previous post, here in a 20th century, circa 1999 Citadel Dryad 5. This one designed & sculpted by Trish Morrison, produced in metal compared to the 21st century one which is in plastic.

The Assault Group, Renaissance, English, Tudor, Cunning Courtier, manservant and Percy

The Assault Group “Black Adder II” miniatures under the guise of their Renaissance English Tudor range as cunning courtier, manservant and Percy. I also added an English milita/border infantry longbow man to represent “Bob”. All miniatures sculpted by Mr Nick Collier.

Reference pictures taken for colour used in painting them. Also painted another set at the same time for my friend Jim.

Citadel ME 72 Dead Men of Dunharrow

Citadel The Lord of the Rings range ME 72 Dead Men of Dunharrow from 1985. This again was a recent repaint. Love these miniatures so much, especially the mount.

Citadel Compendium catalogues showing them in 1985.

American blister pack which was exactly the same as the U.K. packaging, when I bought mine, back in the day.

Spectre Miniatures Agents Bravo

Picked up these miniatures from https://spectreminiatures.com/ for any future games of Delta Green or modern day Call of Cthulhu. Really nice, however at time of this post, these 2 miniatures are out of stock.

The camouflage packs were painted with the invaluable help of Spectre Miniatures Multicam painting guide:  https://www.dropbox.com/s/ot4hz7zzbduogjz/Painting%20Guide%20Multicam.pdf?dl=0

Which is copied here in case the website stops hosting it.

Multicam pattern camouflage is used by most global special forces and a large amount of well-funded national armed forces, as well as many insurgents and other non-state actors. It is important to remember when painting camouflage that you are not trying to exactly replicate the pattern at such a small scale, but the overall effect of the pattern. Whether you are painting DELTA, SAS, Spetsnaz or British army infantry, this guide is for you!

All the figures in this camouflage on the Spectre website have been painted with this method, using the following paints:

  •  Vallejo Model Color - Green Grey
  •  Vallejo Model Color - German Cam. Pale Brown
  •  Citadel Layer – Straken Green
  •  Citadel Base – Waaagh! Flesh
  •  Citadel Base – Dryad Bark
  •  Citadel Layer – Pallid Wych Flesh
  •  Citadel Shade – Athonian Camoshade

Step 1
Taking a figure that has been undercoated back, a layer of  Green Grey was evenly applied to give a solid base to every area that you want to painted in Multicam. As a rule when painting, it is better to apply several thin coats of paint rather than one thick coat.

Step 2
Apply Straken Green in wide and uneven bands or patches, wrapping around limbs where possible. The larger the areas the greener the final camo will be.

Step 3
Paint small uneven patches overlapping the previous coats in Waagh! Flesh. Try to make these patches more horizontal than vertical. Keep these areas small or the final effect will be quite dark. If you are worried you have painted too many, you can cover them in the next step!

Step 4
Covering larger areas than with the previous step, paint German Cam. Pale Brown in uneven and rough edged patches both vertically and horizontally across the camo pattern. These areas can link up to create large ‘snaking’ areas of brown. As with previous steps, the more brown is applied at this stage will lessen the how green the final camo is.

Step 5
Paint Dryad Bark in small horizontal wobbly lines and dots. Apply these sparingly and in random distribution overlapping all other previous colours.

Step 6
In very small lines and dots, sparingly paint Pallid Wych Flesh, thinned with a little water. Be careful not to over apply this step as it will overpower the previous layers.

Step 7
Shake the Athonian Camoshade Shade well and apply a thin layer over the entire pattern and allow to dry thoroughly. This wash will mute all the colours and soften any sharp contrast between the previous steps. Further washes can be applied at this stage by thinning the wash with water or Matt Medium. Brown, sepia or grey washes can also create interesting effects.

And you are done! This method can be varied by adding other colours to the base paints. For example adding grey to each layer colour will give a more worn and faded look, and adding pink (!) will give the Russian urban brick variant (painted on GRU Spetsnaz Grenadier Bravo on the Spectre catalogue).

Statuesque Miniatures Statuesque Starport Range

Statuesque Miniatures Statuesque Starport range. In order from left to right: Able Spacewoman 2 with goggles and toolkit (SP005), Able Spacewoman 1 with torch (SP004) and Able Spaceman 2 with flamethrower (SP003). I decided to go for the same colour scheme as shown on Statuesque website though a bit more vibrant 70s Sci-fi orange, harking back to the days of Space 1999 and UFO.

Sadly at time of writing (June 2023), https://www.statuesqueminiatures.co.uk/ do not seem to be producing these wonderful miniatures and are concentrating on their cuter range of miniatures.

Ral Partha Foot Knight with sword

So this miniature was acquired twice. Once unpainted and the other painted from the Games Workshop cabinet at Dalling Rd, Hammersmith. I just recently painted the other miniature and here are the comparisons of both, my painted version in purple and the one painted from the cabinet in a pinky red. Sculpted by Dennis Mize (who sadly passed away in 2006).

So now for the really confusing cataloguing of this miniature. The base are stamped with Ral Partha and dated 1979. The reference numbers are:
Ral Partha Adventurers 98-002 (F)
Ral Partha RP4 Adventurers (F-03) Fighter 3
